The adult body contains approximately 3.5 to 5 grams of iron. Most of the iron in the human body is found in the red blood pigment (haemoglobin). Haemoglobin is needed by our red blood cells to function properly and ensure a perfect oxygen supply to all body cells. However, iron is indispensable not only for blood formation, but also, for example, for the normal functioning of the immune system. Iron is also involved in the process of cell division. Since our body cannot make iron on its own, it is advisable to supplement it when needed. Ferrous gluconate is a form of iron that is chemically a compound of gluconic acid and iron. It is mainly used as a dietary supplement to increase iron levels in the body. This form of iron is considered to be well absorbed and gentle on the digestive tract. It is made from gluconic acid and iron salts (usually ferrous sulphate). The gluconic acid is neutralized by the ferrous salt, leading to the formation of ferric gluconate. After neutralization, the ferric gluconate solution is purified and then dried into powder form.
