Swedish drops are a macerate of various herbs and spices that have been used as a "panacea" in medieval medicine. In the 18th century, their use according to various prescriptions was renewed in the pharmacy practice of the time, but they did not enjoy a real renaissance until the 1970s thanks to the Austrian herbalist Maria Treben. It's interesting, that there are several recipes for Swedish drops, but there is almost always a lack of plants containing bitter substances, particularly gentian and also the roots of ginger-like plants with a slightly pungent, formerly known as warming effects,such as ginger, lemon and turmeric. Some old recipes would not pass current legislation, especially if they contain an ingredient called theriak. It is actually a mixture of herbs used as an antidote, which in some variants even contained opium.
