Shii take (shi take) grows naturally in Southeast Asia. Japan has a particularly long tradition of cultivating this mushroom, where it is an important export item in its dried form. The mushroom produces fruiting bodies 50-150 mm in diameter, the cap is light brown to dark brown scaly in youth, underwound. Scales are whitish, later partially darkening. The carcass is stiff and scaly on the surface. The fungus can be grown on trunks and branches of deciduous trees or on sterile substrates. Shii take strengthens the immune system, has anticancer activity, antiviral activity, effectively lowers cholesterol, is a source of vitamin B12 and D2.
