Intel Core i3-12100

The Intel Core i3-12100 processor is the foundation for office and multimedia PC builds. It uses 4 performance cores with 8 threads, operating at a base frequency of 3.3GHz which automatically boosts up to 4.3GHz for more demanding operations. Thanks to its 12MB L3 cache, it processes data with low latency. This CPU for office PC builds is based on the 12th generation Alder Lake architecture and is installed in the Intel 1700 socket. It also includes integrated Intel UHD Graphics 730, which handles standard display tasks.

Alder Lake architecture

The processor is built on the Alder Lake architecture. All four cores use the Golden Cove architecture. Intel Thread Director hardware technology manages task allocation, working directly with the operating system to optimise the workload of individual threads for smooth application performance. The processor supports both DDR4 and DDR5 memory modules and the PCIe 5.0 interface. The processor includes an integrated Intel UHD Graphics 730 chip, which handles standard display, high-resolution video playback, and light graphics tasks without the need for a separate graphics card.

Processor cores and threads

Processor cores act, to some extent, like separate processors and can handle computing tasks independently of each other. The more physical cores a processor has, the more tasks it can process simultaneously. Threads can be described as separate virtual cores, which all modern processors have. An eight-core processor typically has sixteen threads, enabling it to handle sixteen processes at once.
Intel processors

Processor frequency

The operating frequency indicates the speed of the processor. Generally, a processor with a higher frequency can execute instructions faster than one with a lower frequency. A higher frequency ensures snappier and faster responses in everyday computer use, such as launching applications, browsing the internet, or editing documents. It ranges from 1 to 5GHz. Some CPUs enable a short-term frequency increase (Turbo Boost) under heavy load.
Intel processors

L2 and L3 cache

To work as fast as possible, a processor needs fast storage where it can store temporary data. The L2 and L3 caches, located directly on the processor, serve this purpose. Although these memory stores are significantly smaller than RAM, they are also faster. L2 and L3 are the first storage the processor interacts with, and generally, the bigger, the better.
Intel processors

Processor socket

Before choosing a new processor, you need to know which hardware connector (socket) your motherboard has for the processor connection. The processor and motherboard must have the same socket designation; this is the first step to a functional build. Another important factor is the type of RAM. You should know what type of RAM you have.
Intel processors

TDP (Thermal Design Power)

TDP (Thermal Design Power) is a processor parameter that indicates the amount of heat it produces under maximum load, while also giving an idea of its power consumption. A lower TDP means the processor consumes less power and generates less heat, which is ideal for laptops or energy-efficient systems. Conversely, processors with a high TDP have higher performance but require advanced cooling to prevent overheating.
Intel processors

Processor cooling

A processor, much like a graphics card, generates heat during operation that needs to be dissipated, thus cooling the processor itself. Some chip packages already include a cooler, but if you want to be absolutely sure you can handle the processor's heat output, you should get an external one. External processor coolers come in various sizes and performance levels, and many support stylish RGB backlighting. You can get a classic air-cooled version or a modern liquid-cooled one.
