About Paul

In 1979, Daňa Horáková became the third and last wife of director and screenwriter Pavel Juráček (1935-1989). In the same year, due to their political views, they were forced to move to West Germany as part of the State Security "Asanace" operation.

In the book, the author describes their meeting, marriage and subsequent life together, first in Bohemia and later in Germany, without any exaggeration or even a little bit of self-censorship. Here we see the pathological relationship of two intellectuals who could not live together, but not without each other either. A narrative as searing as the story of Viktorka and the Black Hunter. In addition to this, however, we also get testimony about the wider circle of many of Juráček's and the author's friends and acquaintances in the field of Czech film, of the theatre, dissent and exile (Václav Havel, Miloš Forman, Vera Chytilová, Jiří Menzel, Rudolf Slánský the Younger, Pavel Kohout, Milan Machovec, Ludvík Vaculík and many others). Far from being a memoir, the book is also a general reflection on human nature, interpersonal relationships, the pressure of history on man, and ultimately on human destiny and human responsibility for one's own life in general.
