After the funeral

But he was murdered, wasn't he?

So said Cora Lansquenet at her brother Richard's wake at the family mansion, Enderby Hall - quite inappropriately as usual. The remaining members of the Abernethie family considered that their eldest member had died prematurely but naturally. Mr Entwhistle, the lawyer, executor of the will, and also a personal friend of Richard's, was of the same opinion. The next day, however, poor foolish Cora is the victim of a brutal murder. Wasn't there some truth to what she said after all? But in such a case only Richard's relatives would have a motive... Mr Entwhistle is not sure, because each of them is more than entitled to a share of the considerable inheritance, and besides, not a single member of the family has a proper alibi for the time of Cora's murder. And so he enlists the help of the brilliant private detective Hercule Poirot...
The novel was first used as the basis for Murder in Gallop (1963), where Poirot was replaced by Miss Marple. In the TV series with actor David Suchet, we know this story in the Czech translation under the title Family Mansion (2005).

Great fun, lots of family drama. All this is served through Christie's sharp wit.

Agatha Christie

(1890-1976) Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Lady Mallowan, née Miller, was born in the seaside resort of Torquay in southern England. She is the best-known author of detective stories and the most published writer of all time. She made her Hercule Poirot the hero of 33 novels and nearly 60 short stories. In a literary career spanning fifty-five years, she has enriched the sleuthing scene with the elusive Mr. Quin and the retired clerk Parker Pyne, but her favourite investigator remains the little Belgian. She also became famous as a playwright (1952's The Mousetrap is the longest-running play in history) and wrote social novels under a pseudonym. The enduring interest in her work is confirmed by a number of film adaptations, most recently including the miniseries Witness for the Prosecution (2016), The Swimming Horse (2020) and Why Didn't They Ask Evans? (2022). The big screen adaptations of Murder on the Orient Express (2017) and Death on the Nile (2022) will be joined in 2023 by a film adaptation of I Saw Murder, under the title Ghosts of Venice - all directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh.
