Allstar Refugee Band: Save! - CD

The first album by the Allstar Refjúdží Band is called Spas! This is not a command to save someone. Nor is it a text message spelling of the Czech word for 'joke'. Spas means thank you in Kurdish. It's the word the band's frontman, Miran Kasem, shouts after every song at their concerts.

The band, which energetically stirs brass band music, ska, rap, klezmer, dixieland, Chinese opera, and Armenian and Kurdish melodies in one pot, is made up of musicians from China, Kurdistan, Armenia, Slovakia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and the USA. If the band's style can be categorised at all, it can be said that under the leadership of American musician Michael Romanyshyn, one of the most original bands in so-called world music has been formed.
