Alois Musil: First time in the desert
Alois Musil, a doctor of theology, Catholic priest, traveller and writer, ethnographer and adventurer with a reputation as a spy, is considered one of the greatest Orientalists and Arabists of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, and is considered one of the world's most renowned representatives of Czech science. He published the results of his travels and studies in an extensive six-volume series, Oriental Explorations and Studies. But he also had young readers in mind, to whom he dedicated twenty adventure novels set in the Arab world. Libor Magdoň adapted the travelogue Tajemná Ambra (The Mysterious Ambra) for a five-part radio reading, but he also drew partly from a version for young people called First Time in the Desert. The author tells of his journey to the castle known as Ambra in Musil's transcription. Indeed, without the accompaniment of members of one of the local tribes, the place was almost inaccessible and the wandering dangerous.
