Shadow gets out of prison after three years.   His beloved wife Laura is dead and all his prospects have suddenly shrunk into a cold void.   On the way to the funeral, on a storm-tossed plane, Shadow is approached by an elderly man named Wednesday and offered to enter his service.   Shadow refuses at first, but after a night of drinking, in a bloody brawl with Center's friend Poppy Sweeney and then, who gets to witness some incredible stunts, that are dangerously reminiscent of real magic, he'll eventually accept Wednesday's offer.   And he becomes part of the strangest message ever to cross America.   Even the New World has its gods.   And they are definitely - at least for now - not dead.
