An eye for an eye
A case that won't let a former detective retire
After the last case, former DCI Jack Logan and his colleagues and friends are left with scars on their bodies and souls, and Jack is overcome with guilt. He retreats into voluntary exile on a sparsely populated island, hoping the fresh air and silence will help him find peace and quiet.
But the fresh air and silence are a bit too much for the retired detective, and when his former colleagues ask him to lead a murder investigation team again, he seriously considers the offer.
When the bodies of a mother and her young daughter are found, he has no choice but to get back in the saddle and put a stop to the brutal killer's rampage before they strike again.
However, the world has moved on in his absence, and if Logan wants to fit in, it will take more effort than he originally imagined.
Will he be willing to make it? Maybe he wasn't so bad off in early retirement after all.

J. D. Kirk is the pseudonym of Barry Hutchison, who lives in the Scottish town of Fort William with his wife and two children. J. D. Kirk is a screenwriter and director, and above all, the author of countless children's books and a comedy sci-fi series for adults. He has been using the pseudonym since 2019, when he published his first crime novel, A Litter of Bones (Vendeta, 2022), creating the character of DCI Jack Logan, about whom he has already written a whole series of books – in addition to the aforementioned A Litter of Bones, these include Thicker Than Water (2023), The Killing Code (2024), A Shallow Grave (2024), A Silent Witness (2025) and A Whisper of Sorrows (2025). The first volume of a new series about DI Heather Filson, entitled Northwind (2025), has also been published in the same series, and you are now holding the second volume in your hands.
