Ancient Greek myths and legends
Ancient Greek Myths and Legends is probably Eduard Petiška's most famous book, containing stories from Greek mythology retold for children and young people. The individual stories are about Greek gods, heroes, mythical figures and monsters. By 2012, the book had been published a total of fifteen times in the Czech Republic alone.
At the beginning of the communist era, Eduard Petiška did not believe that he would ever manage to publish a book for adults again. That is why he conceived it, as he later stated, as a \"novel about life in Bohemia\", about Czech despairs and hopes, i.e. as a key novel where the individual gods represented individual politicians and attitudes.
This archetypal conception of the classical material is probably the reason for its international success; it is not just a retelling of ancient myths, but a unified account of human life and character, a message that is understandable in all the languages into which the book has been translated and published (German, English, Italian, Dutch, Finnish, Russian, Hungarian, Estonian, etc.). In France, it had gone through twenty-five editions by 2011 and became required school reading.
The author's work was already divided into two main branches before this book: literature for adults and literature for children and young people, with each branch further dividing into other areas, thus covering the entire spectrum of reading ages and interests. It can be said that Ancient Greek Myths and Legends is the cornerstone of Petiška's work.
