At the Head of the Mantichory

Restaurateurs, Monsters and Good Food, Only the Heroes Are Missing

Being half a halfling is no great prize for Alren Sedmikvítek, a young man scraping by in a village terrorised by monsters. Especially when, in addition to his hayseed neighbours, the gang leader Kresta has it in for him and is determined to show him his place. Which is in the graveyard.
But everything changes with the arrival of the dwarf chef Fnayir and the mysterious Mr. Akved, who are about to turn an abandoned inn into a modern restaurant. That is, if they can deal with the bureaucrats, saboteurs, and food critics. Nevertheless, Alren is clear on his new calling: He will become a chef!
Many hundreds of miles away, the paladin Božizmar, the ranger Ryalin and the priest Grunghi are recovering from a disastrous expedition. Could the restaurateurs help them with that? And can Alren keep up with the momentous events rushing towards him – including the contents of his stomach when he finds out where his bosses get all that delicious meat from?

Jakub Hoza

Born in 1978 in Benešov. Although he long thought a hat and whip would suit him, he eventually studied Electronic Computer Systems and now works in the IT department of an unnamed health insurance company. He primarily writes "deviant" dark fantasy and "splatterpunk" action sci-fi. He has published nine books to date (Divadlo mrtvých, Okovy osudu, Projít ohněm, Do pekla a zpět, Jako sama smrt, Spálená země, Sochaři masa, Bez návratu, and U Hlavy mantichory) and occasionally contributes short stories to Pevnost magazine. For more than thirty years, Hoza has been engaged in the theoretical and practical study of close combat, especially with bladed weapons. Some of the walls of his Prague flat are so hung with steel that they look like a castle armoury. Besides this, he dedicates his time mainly to his family and writing. From time to time, he enjoys re-reading something by his favourite authors: Sapkowski, Kulhánek, and Pratchett.
