Atlas of the Mediterranean
It is well-known that Tolkien had a precise idea of the physical
form of his fantasy world, and he himself drew several maps of it in various versions. The Atlas of Middle-earth naturally makes use of these but is primarily based on Tolkien's descriptions and accounts in his texts.
In many detailed maps, diagrams, and sketches, it captures
the journeys of heroes, the campaigns of armies, battles, and schematics of various locations
and structures; it also offers a number of thematic maps dedicated to climate,
nations, or languages. It allows readers of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and other
Tolkien works to imagine the author's world in a more vivid way.
The Atlas of Middle-earth was first published in 1981, after which the author revised and supplemented it in connection with the publication of previously unknown Tolkien texts. The Argo edition is based on the latest
version from 1994 (translated into Czech in 1998), but it features
new, more elaborate illustrations.
