Augustine of Hippo
Brown's most famous work is undoubtedly the biography of one of the most important Christian thinkers - St. Augustine. Although Brown wrote this biography in the late 1960s, it remains the most comprehensive treatment of the Catholic bishop who laid a solid foundation for late antique Christianity. Brown revised his work several times, and the last version was published in 2000. In it, he reflected the latest research and suggested how his image of St. Augustine under the influence of new source discoveries differs from today's conception. Brown constructs Augustine's biography as a classical biography that strictly adheres to a chronological framework. This allows him to capture in detail the genesis of Augustine's religious, religio-political and theological ideas. The publication of the book was supported by the City of Prague.
