Where others lose hope, she finds the courage to fight. Alone against everyone.
One weekday morning in 1943, Helene Hannemann was getting her five children ready for school when German police officers entered her apartment. Helen's worst fears had come true: On strict orders from the SS, her entire family - her children and her husband, all of Romani origin - were to be taken into custody. Although Helene was German and the order did not apply to her, she refused to leave her family.
After a terrible journey, they arrived at Auschwitz, where they were thrown into the turmoil of camp life. Her husband Johann was separated from the family, but Helene tried with all her might to protect her children and those around her. When her captors discovered that Helene was not only German but also a trained nurse, they forced her to serve in the camp hospital, which was run by the infamous Dr. Mengele. Even though the conditions in Auschwitz were destroying her mentally and physically, she did everything in her power to help all the children around her to have at least a little better life.
