Austrian Archives: Past and Present
Today, the Republic of Austria is a relatively small state. Until 1918, however, Austria-Hungary was a major European power. Austrian archives are therefore – thanks to their size and historical significance – among the richest in Europe. This collective publication presents the history and present day of Austrian archival science, first with a brief overview, and then in detail using the example of 16 institutions: all four departments of the Austrian State Archives, as well as selected provincial, municipal, university, church and private archives. The authors of the individual chapters are current or former archivists from the respective archives. The book is intended primarily for students of history and archival science, as well as professional historians and archivists from all the successor states of the Danubian Monarchy.
