On the Brink of Eternal Winter and the Other Side of the World
In these two novellas, we visit a world governed by relentless natural cycles, where scorching summer gives way to bleak winter, and where life and death are inextricably linked. Its inhabitants face it with the strength of their weapons and their spirit, and are only just beginning to understand its true nature.
The heroes of the Last Watch face the most difficult task of their lives. In the coming harsh winter, they must stand guard to protect the sleeping city of Awaor from an enemy no living person has ever seen. They have no idea what awaits them, nor whether they will succeed—they only know that they are leaving for the Last Watch, from which they will never return. But perhaps on this journey, they will uncover a part of their world's secret…
In the distant city of Harynř, a gate to the underworld has supposedly been opened—and an Awaorian Master, accompanied by a young boy, sets out to find out how much truth there is to these rumours. At the end of their adventurous journey, they might find the Other Side of the World, but perhaps something entirely different…
Tomáš Petrásek
Born in Prague. He has been interested in astronomy and biology since time immemorial. He studied neuroscience at Charles University and currently works as a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health, where he studies the brain and behaviour. He also actively popularises the natural sciences through lectures and articles on the web and in magazines. He found a connection between his two hobbies in astrobiology, which asks us the deepest questions about life, the universe, and everything. In 2009 and 2010, he co-authored the two-volume book series Vzdálené světy (Distant Worlds) with Igor Duszek, about the icy moons of giant planets and the possibilities of extraterrestrial life in this environment. Since 2015, he has been lecturing on astrobiology at Charles University. He is also a great fan of speculative fiction, especially hard sci-fi. He debuted in this genre with the novella Poslední hlídka (The Last Watch) (in the collection Mlok 2007, published separately in 2012). He has contributed short stories to a number of collections: Tvůrci (The Creators) (Kočas 2009), Bensonové efekt (The Benson Effect) (Terra nullius, 2015), Svit dvou lun (The Light of Two Moons) (Kočas 2015), Plout nevídanou pouští (Sailing an Unseen Desert) (Mlok 2019) and Stvořitel (The Creator) (Zákon genu, 2022). Hlídka Awaoru (The Watch of Awaor) (2025) is a republication of the successful novella Poslední hlídka, to which the author has added the novella Druhá strana světa (The Other Side of the World).
