Baborák Radek: Orchestra (2014) - CD
The world-famous horn player Radek Baborák selected compositions inspired by dance in various forms for his project “Orquestrina“; in addition to works by well-known authors such as Ástor Piazzolla (History of Tango), Gabriel Fauré (Pavana) or Maurice Ravel (Boléro), the album also contains lesser-known works such as Jewish music-inspired dances and songs by Leo Kogan, a French horn suite and the Corrada string quartet Saglietti and a trio of solo horn miniatures.
The fifteen-member ensemble composed Baborák from excellent soloists and chamber ensemble players, and presents a number of compositions in a premiere surprising arrangement created directly for the purposes of the project. The album, located on the border of genres, is full of energy and a sovereign interpretation of first-class qualities and will undoubtedly become an event on the (not only Czech) music scene.
Radek Baborák states about the album: “Compositions for French horn in the second half of the 20th century did not bring us any horns to the horn players, which would somehow become more significantly known to the listeners. Brilliant concerts by Mozart, Schumann or Strauss are an integral part of the horn repertoire, but if I want to play songs by more modern authors, I have to look for adjustments.
Therefore, the whole project would not have been possible without the collaboration with composers and arrangers František Šterbák and Tomáš Ille. A huge benefit was also the cooperation with the Epoque quartet, which is dedicated to jazz, avant-garde and modern music, and we have met its members since studying at the conservatory and during our other projects. An indispensable and distinctive element, not only musical and sound, but also human, is Petr Pepino Valášek with his bass clarinet, which he controls in a completely unexpected way.
I hope and believe that you will be interested in Orquestrina and that you will find yourself with us in the past, which we map for you with a trip to the inspiring environment of dance halls, night bars and cafes, ie into the environment which musicians usually like and where live music thrives. ”
