Basic practical exercises in pharmaceutical technology

Practical exercises are an important part of the teaching of pharmaceutical technology, in which students of the Faculty of Pharmacy acquire basic knowledge and skills in the preparation of dosage forms. The textbook is divided according to the technological specifics of medicinal products and is organized from simpler forms represented by homogeneous systems (solutions and special types of solutions), through colloidal dispersions (slimes and gels), to coarse dispersions (suspensions, emulsions). The basic knowledge is applied and developed in semi-solids (ointments, creams, pastes) and solid preparations (suppositories, vaginal beads, oral pills, backfilling). The text includes a chapter on incompatibilities, tables of emulsifiers and solubility tables of selected medicinal and excipients. The focus is on three main aspects of preparation: knowledge of the requirements for the dosage form; learning the correct techniques and basic principles of working in a pharmaceutical laboratory; understanding of the basic technological principles and approaches used in the preparation of medicinal products for different application routes. An integral part of this is the assessment of critical factors affecting the quality of the medicinal product with regard to its stability, microbiological quality and efficacy, the selection of appropriate packaging and the determination of the shelf life of the product.
