Before your anger passes
Sometimes you can't hide the truth even under a thick layer of ice.
Rebecka Martinsson, a prosecutor in Kiruna, northern Sweden, and a former top lawyer in Stockholm, this time organises a major search for the perpetrator who cold-bloodedly closed the young couple's way out of the freezing water trap. The wreckage of the plane sunk in the lake apparently hides something worth risking the couple's own lives for. But the rope connecting them to the air and land was cut and the hole in the ice barricaded. When the shocked divers ran out of oxygen, they were certain to die... Who committed the cruel crime and what was their motive? Further investigation revives old rumours about a German supply plane that disappeared in 1943 and Nazi collaborators in a nearby town whose inhabitants are trying hard to forget the war years.
The fourth installment of the crime series set in the Arctic Circle, which was the basis for a successful TV series. Can the investigators unravel the web of guilt, fear and betrayal that binds members of the local community?
"Rebecka Martinsson is the new heroine of Scandinavian noir." - iNews
"Even in the TV world, which is now awash with female cops, there aren't many characters as interesting and human as Rebecka." - Wall Street Journal
"This excellent book stands on three basic pillars: style, knowledge of human nature and plot." - Svenska Dagbladet
"The genius and ease with which this author writes will always absorb you perfectly. With each successive story, I fall more and more in love with the harsh, wintry Swedish landscape and the psychological depth of the story and the characters themselves." - from reader feedback on Databazeknih.cz
I REMEMBER how we died. I remember it and I know it. That's what I got now. I know some things, even if I haven't experienced them myself. But I don't know everything. Far from it. There are no rules. For example, people. Sometimes they're like an open room that I can walk into. Other times, they're locked. Time does not exist. It's like he's been chopped to pieces.
Winter came, but it didn't snow. The water level froze in September, but the snow took its time.
It was the ninth of October. The air was cold. Sky blue. The kind of day you'd like to pour into a glass and drink.
I was seventeen. If I were still alive, I'd be 18 now. Simon was almost nineteen. He let me drive even though I don't have a license. I liked driving. The forest road was a hole. I laughed every time the car jumped. Gravel and pebbles pounded the undercarriage.
"Sorry, Betta," Simon said to the car, patting the glove compartment.
We didn't know we were going to die. I'm gonna scream with my mouth full of water. That we only have five hours left. - excerpt from the book
