Between the Species: Dialogues on Ethical Vegetarianism
The number of animals kept in inhumane conditions on factory farms and killed for human consumption runs into the tens of billions annually. This simple fact naturally raises one of the fundamental philosophical questions: Are our actions right?
In this short book, a pair of students try to find the answer through four Socratic dialogues. Through them, the author articulates not only his own views on the issue, but also the views of others, from influential philosophers like himself to ordinary people in a café or restaurant who, during their conversations, try to refine their view of the world around us. And it is precisely for them that this book can be of significant help.
Routledge has also published a paid version of the book, with a foreword by another famous philosopher and lifelong animal rights activist, Peter Singer. In it, he is quoted as saying that if he is asked for essential reading on the subject, he will from now on recommend The Dialogues with a clear conscience. We can only agree with him wholeheartedly.
