Anna and Reid need a bit of good luck to finally come their way.
After a terrifyingly complicated birth of their first child, Anna is paralysed and embittered, forced to contend with the limitations of life in a wheelchair, her relationship with Reid, and her resentment towards their child. All of that is set to change with the words every New Yorker wants to hear: affordable housing.
The young couple wins the rental lottery and gets a flat in The Deptford, one of New York's most admired buildings, with beautiful views of Central Park and magnificent architecture.
Reid dismisses the unsettling events and Anna's deep-seated fears and paranoia as the price of living in New York, where he thinks people are just plain weird, but he can't explain the needle-like bite marks on their baby's body.
