Burned by frost
A werewolf pack has been kidnapped, the future of the race is at stake, and the queen of dark urban fantasy reigns once more!
If the urban fantasy subgenre has a queen right now, it is none other than the American author Patricia Briggs. Although she began her career searching for her authorial voice in the realm of classic fantasy, it was the stories of the coyote skinwalker Mercedes Thompson that brought her unprecedented popularity.
The character of the tattooed car mechanic with supernatural abilities, who very often stands on the perilous border between the world of humans and mythical beings, is a testament to the author's genius. The setting in which Mercy's adventures take place was crafted with similarly brilliant imagination by Patricia Briggs.
Welcome to the Tri-Cities, a place where humans, whose only supernatural ability is managing to get up for work every morning, live alongside the so-called Fae – vampires, gnomes, and werewolves. The coexistence of different races – as we know from our own reality – isn't always smooth sailing: on the contrary, it's the cornerstone around which most of the problems Mercy gets herself entangled in, with her characteristic tenacity, revolve. Burnt by the future.
Thanks to the publisher FANTOM Print, which has been bringing the series to Czech and Slovak readers since 2009 – complete with gorgeous covers by Daniel Dos Santos – the seventh instalment, titled Frost Burned, is now on the market. In it, Mercy faces perhaps the most difficult task she has ever had to undertake. The entire werewolf pack has been kidnapped, including her mate and the clan's alpha male, Adam Hauptman. At stake are not only their lives but also the future of the werewolf race and perhaps all the Fae living in the Tri-Cities. And Mercedes Thompson will have to use all her strength to handle it all without anyone coming to harm.
Patricia Briggs
Patricia Briggs' first novel, Masques, was published in 1993. The book was not a success, and the author's career almost ended before it began. Fortunately, her second novel, Steal the Dragon (1995), sold much better, and her writing career slowly took off. The growing popularity of her books, combined with her ability to create vivid, convincing characters, inspired her publisher to ask if she would try writing a modern urban fantasy. Briggs accepted the challenge and signed a contract for a series of novels starring Mercy Thompson. Smoke Bitten (2020) is the latest, twelfth instalment in the successful series and universe. The first book in the Mercy Thompson series (Moon Called) made it onto the USA Today bestseller list. The second instalment, Blood Bound, in turn, placed on the New York Times bestseller list. Iron Kissed, the third book, even took the number one spot on this prestigious list. The success was so enormous that further instalments of this still-unfinished series are being created. The author also came up with a spin-off series, Alpha & Omega, which is also published by Fantom Print alongside the main Mercedes Thompson series.
