Businesswoman from Amsterdam

The year is 1892. Lydia is mourning the loss of her parents, who died shortly after each other. She inherited their house in Amsterdam and a country house in Purmerend. Despite her sadness, she is full of ideas for the future and determined to carry out her father's plans: to establish a modern, steam-powered cheese factory. But as a woman, she is not allowed to run her own business. He decides to work with Huib, a progressive farmer from the area. Together they are gradually building the largest cheese factory in North Holland.

The year is 1913. Nora, Lydia's daughter, marries Ralph, the son of a wealthy merchant, and the couple settle in Antwerp. After a serious conflict with her mother over her father's parentage, Nora couldn't be happier to be away from home. Bound by norms, however, she often doubts her role in society and, in time, her own marriage. But then World War I breaks out and she flees the city in the middle of a terrifying night. What will her future look like? And who does her husband really love?

It is translated by Lenka Rehova.
