The sun is slowly dying and planet Earth is no longer blue. There is only one city left, where the last human community survives. Beyond the city's borders lies either a toxic mass of ocean or a wild, dark jungle inhabited by monsters and mutants. The people live with the knowledge of an inevitably approaching end. In their desire for immortality, they perform genetic transformations or attempt to preserve the forgotten art of reading and writing and leave behind a message about the age of humans.

The undesirable and the rebels are sent to the Island – a penal colony in the jungle. In one transport is Stefan Advani, a rebel, an outlaw, and a chess player, one of those trying to break the bars of the soul's cage.

This is his story and the story of the end of civilisation. The new heirs of Earth are coming.
