The drama of the Volyn Czechs in Ukraine.
The fate of several generations of a Czech family that moved to Volhynia. In the story of two women, Ani and her daughter Liza, the author describes how historical dramas affected the lives of ordinary people.
In the 1870s, recruiters came to Podřipsko. They persuaded young people to move to Volhynia, promising them fertile land, forests full of game, tax exemption and Czech self-government. And also coexistence with Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Russians, Jews and Poles, who can learn a lot from the Czechs. Jan Sládek, a hard worker who could hardly support his family at home, also picked himself up and set off into the unknown with his wife. The author describes the fate of his family, who lived through two wars in Volhynia and survived the rampages of the Reds, Poles, Germans and Russians in this buffer zone, in beautiful, rich language. It brings to the fore the story of Sládek's granddaughter Ani and her daughter Líza, two strong women who stood up to the difficult trials of life brought about by historical dramas that affected the lives of ordinary people. Let's listen to the rough, raw narrative that is interwoven with love, the most important thing that can happen to us in life.
