Černý Petr (DIGITALLY RESTAURED FI
A humorous probe into the everyday life of youth in the 1960s, it remains a penetrating sociological study of intergenerational relations, as well as an artistically valuable synthesis of European film modernism with local "laughter culture".
Miloš Forman's feature debut and a legendary work of the Czechoslovak New Wave in a digitally restored version.
Miloš Forman made his debut as a feature filmmaker with this tragicomedy about a 16-year-old who is confronted with the hypocrisy of the adult world in his first job. The protagonist of the film, Petr, joins a small-town convenience store, where he is tasked with looking after customers. The leader acts as an authority figure without understanding, just like his good-natured father, and Peter does not feel very confident among his peers either. The authenticity of this ageless film is based on the performances of Forman's non-actorial discoveries (Ladislav Jakim, Jan Vostrčil) and on the visual stylization, which expresses the absurd and grotesque features of Czechoslovak everyday life in the early 1960s.
