Change the water for the flowers
Violette Dušičková is the keeper of a cemetery in a small town in Burgundy. An unusual profession for a woman. Visitors to the cemetery and local residents alike come to warm themselves in her small house, where laughter and tears mix with coffee and a drop of something stronger. Her life flows in a regular rhythm of daily intimate confessions and sad yet amusing memories that her visitors confide in her. Each one tells a different story; all have lost someone and hope that perhaps this is not the end of their days, that they will meet someone or find something that will bring a smile back to their faces. Violette listens to everyone, but she carries her own story hidden deep inside her, just like the red dress she hides under her black coat. But one day, everything changes, because a man and a woman decide to rest together forever in her cemetery. This reveals the bonds connecting the living and the dead, and the seemingly dark corners of the soul brighten.
The author has a rare narrative talent, not lacking the ability to make the ordinary extraordinary, to create an unusual world full of poetry and humanity around an ordinary woman. A world that we all need right now.
