Infectious diarrhea kills 1,438 babies and toddlers every day. Unnecessarily. Diarrheal diseases are the most common cause of child deaths in the world and are directly related to polluted water. Young children in developing countries suffer from diarrhea on average 3 times annually. It loses important nutrients necessary for proper growth and development. Diarrhea is thus one of the main causes of child malnutrition. Malnourished children have reduced immunity and it is easier to get diarrhea again. At the same time, we have long been able to treat and prevent infectious diarrhea.

Diarrhea is a symptom of an infection caused by bacteria, viruses and parasites, most of which are transmitted in contaminated water. Infection is more prevalent where sanitation and hygiene and access to safe water for drinking, cooking and washing are inadequate. Key measures to prevent infectious diarrhea include access to drinking water, improvement of sanitation, washing hands with soap, breast feeding, the first 6 months of life, washing food, personal hygiene and rotavirus vaccination.

Infectious diarrhea and child malnutrition People in Need is fighting together in four African countries: in Ethiopia, Congo, Angola and Zambia. Our approach is comprehensive, from ensuring the availability of drinking water and we help organize the maintenance of the entire water management system, through medical training, in which we explain to people in remote villages the connection between sanitation and the spread of infections, to support the expansion of the cultivation of hardy and nutritious crops, which feed children and prevent malnutrition.
