It's 1985 and eighteen-year-old Coco Pinchard is returning home to London for Christmas after her first term at Aberystwyth University. She's fallen head over heels for Daniel Pinchard, a devilishly handsome musician from the wrong side of the tracks. But her tyrannical mother has other plans, hoping to set her up with Kenneth, a ‘good catch’ and the son of her best friends who are coming for Christmas lunch. The meal, however, takes an unexpected turn when Coco's snobbish mother and henpecked father meet Daniel's eccentric mother, Ethel, his sister, Meryl, and Jean-Paul Belmondo, the Christmas turkey.
Fast forward to December 1992, seven years later. Coco is now married and her son, Rosencrantz, is four. Like every other child in the country, he's obsessed with the Tracy Island toy. And when the children are obsessed, so are the parents! With Christmas fast approaching, Coco is desperately trying to make sure Rosencrantz gets to unwrap his dream toy on Christmas morning. Add her awful boss, a lazy Daniel, and the prospect of the in-laws arriving for the holidays into the mix, and it's no wonder Coco wishes she could cancel Christmas and sail away to a deserted island—and definitely not Tracy's!
