Crusades: the Crescent and the Cross 2 - DVD

1. Part of
Saladin became a hero of the West long before his fame was hailed by the Muslim world at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The famous truce agreement he made with King Richard the Lionheart of England has undoubtedly gone down in history as the most important event of the Crusades. This episode of the Crusades documentary reveals the long-forgotten story of Saladin, Richard and the Third Crusade. Saladin unexpectedly came to power after the death of Sultan Nour ad-Din. During his reign, the word "jihad" became synonymous with the Muslim world's struggle against hostile crusaders. After the unification of Syria and Egypt, he crushed the Crusader armies at the Battle of Hattin in 1187 and captured Jerusalem.
2. Part of
After the death of Sultan Saladin, the Crusader kingdom was reduced to a narrow strip of land with a handful of ports. The Fourth Crusade never reached the Holy Land, instead the army settled in Constantinople. Although further expeditions followed to support the declining Crusader states in the Middle East, the last remnants of the Crusaders were finally driven out in 1291 by the Mamluks. The documentary will show us the last moments of the Holy Empire through the eyes of the Mongols, Mamluks and besieged Crusaders.
