The verses of the medieval Persian poet Omar Khayyam are treasures of world literature and are as relevant as modern poetry—which is why they continue to be republished. The philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer looks at human life from cosmic heights, seeing its pettiness and transience, but also its hunger for knowledge, happiness, understanding, love, and contentment; just as Shakespeare, Pascal, or Baudelaire would later do. He knew that none of us are here for long, which is why every waking moment is precious. Last but not least, Khayyam expresses his opposition to Muslim Arabs, their fanaticism and dogmatism, sectarianism, and pharisaical hypocrisy. This makes his wise verses all the more relevant today.
