John Tyree is a soldier in the U.S. Army, which he enlisted in after high school just to find something to do with his aimless life. After years of war in the Balkans, he returns home for a few days to fall unexpectedly and irrevocably in love with the girl of his dreams. The charming and kind Savannah reciprocates his feelings and for one summer week the whole world becomes a playground for their love. Savannah says goodbye to John with a definite promise: If you come back, I'll marry you. Neither admits that the distance between them can break the sincere but fragile bond.
Then comes September 11, 2001-and the world changes forever. John has to choose between his promise to Savannah and the oath he took for his country. He returns to the army, and Savannah promises to wait for him - only to discover that separation is a cruel test of love. The book was made into a successful film by Oscar-winning director Lasse Hallström, starring Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum.
