The Royal Council meets at Karlštejn for its deliberations. But after a wild night of alcohol and vice, the dead body of its member Ctibor Berka of Dubá is found in the castle well. Was it an accident or was it murder? This is to be found out by James Protiva of Protivec, assistant to the royal judge, and his friend, the witty monk Blasius.
