Didonato, Yannick: Winterreise - CD

Schubert's famous song cycle Winterreise ("Winter Journey") was written about a year before the composer's untimely death. It is a collection of 24 songs on texts by Wilhelm Müller, which in the form of memories and fragments very loosely "tells" the story of a young man deeply disappointed in love. Although Winter Journey was originally intended for the tenor voice, its undeniable musical qualities and its appeal to the listener eventually led to its "capture" by virtually all voice parts. After a number of famous mezzo-sopranos of the past (let us mention Christa Ludwig or Brigitte Fassbaender), the American singer Joyce DiDonato decided to seek her own interpretive path to the cycle. Together with the Canadian conductor and pianist Yannick Nézet-Séguin, they have chosen an unconventional approach - this time they tell the story not from the point of view of the desperate young man, but from the perspective of the one who failed him so much and now learns about his plight from his late letters. At least, that was the chosen quasi-poloscenic concept of the work, recorded in December 2019 at New York's Carnegie Hall.
