Domažlicka bagpipe music: Christmas is coming - CD
The recording of 20 Chod carols was not made primarily as material for the release of a music CD. The first impulse was an approach to Domažlice Bagpipe Music by Czech Radio Plzeň to record original images for the archive and broadcast of this important public media. The Domažlice bagpipe music is mainly made up of professional musicians and singers and is headed by the director of the Jindřich Jindřich Primary Art School, singer, leading Czech bagpiper and director of many Czech Radio folklore programmes, Mr Josef Kuneš.
With its concept and selection of songs, the CD should highlight the still living and lively tradition of bagpipe music in Domažlice and the relevance of the original folk lyrics of Chod songs for today's time and contemporary listeners. Especially the theme of Chod and Czech Christmas is still topical and listening to these songs is an annual ritual for many. That is why the songs selected from the old songbooks of Master Jindřich Jindřich, whose great-nephew Kamil Jindřich is one of the interpreters of the Domažlice bagpipe music, were approached very sensitively and with a sense of preserving the values and traditions that the preserved songs convey to today's listeners.
The Domažlice bagpipe music will present all its singers, in various arrangements of songs accompanied by solo instruments only, as well as in arrangements for the so-called "dudácká" instruments. "little peasant music" (Es clarinet, bagpipes, violin), up to the full band (2 clarinets, violin, double bass). A specific feature of the recordings on this CD is the currently very rare use of old historical musical instruments such as C bagpipes, dulcimer, ninera, xylophone or fanfrnoch. The typical colouring of these instruments gives the whole recording a completely unique sound, which is so typical of Chod, but also of Czech or Old Bohemian Christmas in general.
