Stabat Mater, op. 58 by Antonín Dvořák with the subtitle “Oratorio for soloists, choir and orchestra” is a vocal-instrumental work based on the text of the old church anthem Stabat Mater.
The composition premiered on December 23, 1880 in Prague at the annual concert of the Union of Music Artists. The performance was directed by Adolf Čech, the soloists were Eleonora Ehrenbergová (soprano), Betty Fibichová (alto), Antonín Vávra (tenor) and Karel Čech (bass). The work was first performed abroad in 1882 in Budapest, under the direction of Imre Bellowicz and then with great success at London' s Royal Albert Hall, conducted by Joseph Barnby.
“The orchestra made excellent recordings of all Dvořák' s symphonies, concerts, Slavonic Dances and Stabat Mater at Decca under Bělohlávek' s direction, which many critics praised as new canonical versions of these parts of Dvořák' s work. ”
