Eduard Bass: Circus Humberto (1961)
Eduard Bass's novel Circus Humberto was published during the years of occupation, although it was written in 1930. Most readers saw it as a moral boost in the difficult times of the war, as the story of several generations of circus performers showed the indomitability and hard work of Czech performers, acrobats and "daddies". Eduard Bass describes here the most famous period of travelling circuses and their downfall at the beginning of the twentieth century. We begin to follow the story of the circus with the arrival of Antonín Karas, a bricklayer whose need for work leads him to the circus. He brings his son Vasik, who will play a significant role in the history of the famous Humberto Circus. Performers: Antonín Karas (Jaroslav Průcha), Vasik, his son (Miroslav Kostka), Kerholec (Rudolf Deyl Jr. ), Malina (Jaroslav Vojta), Vosátka (Martin Růžek), Bures (Miroslav Dolezal), Director (Ales Podhorsky), Madame (Jiřina Petrovická), Helen (Helena Hustoles), Hein Moeseccke (Miloš Liška), Harwey (Vladimir Hlavaty), Selnickij (Oldrich Musil), Hans (Otomar Korbelář), Achmed Romeo (Karel Houska) and Paolo (Jan Ekl). Directed by: Josef Svátek
