Émile Verhaeren: Philip II.

Václav Voska, Otomar Krejča, Vlasta Chramostová and Miloš Nedbal in the main roles of the well-known story from the dark period of 16th century Spanish history, as captured by Belgian author Émile Verhaeren in one of his dramatic works. The Spanish infante don Carlos de Austria has lived too long in the shadow of his absolutist father Philip II. The oppressive atmosphere of suspicion and fear spread by the king's advisors from the Inquisition at the Escorial court has a bad effect on the young heir to the throne's mental constitution. Moments of euphoria and fearless determination are replaced by bouts of despair and disbelief in one's own strength. Don Carlos finds support in his love for a French countess, who encourages him to claim his rights and realise his dreams. Persons and cast: Philip II.., King of Spain (Otomar Krejča), Don Carlos, infant, Prince of Asturias (Václav Voska), Countess de Clermont, Court Lady (Vlasta Chramostova), Fray Bernardo, the king's confessor (Miloš Nedbal), Don Juan de Austria (Bohumil Švarc) and The Guard (Jaroslav Synák)Excuse me, Please, the technical quality of the sound recording.
