A Vision of the Future: Between Hope and Dystopia
What will the world look like in 2084, a century after Orwell's famous dystopian vision? Will we be ruled by artificial intelligence? Will we be ground down by a barbarian invasion? Will we still have sex? Will we colonise the Moon? Will we find the recipe for immortality? Will a neo-Marxist totalitarianism engulf us? Or will we be scraping by at a Stone Age level? These and other questions are posed by Pavel Hénik in twenty short stories. He is an experienced writer who has, among other things, two dystopian novels to his name. Some stories are serious and harsh, others are light-hearted and humorous, but they all have one thing in common. They lead the reader to reflect on whether the current direction of the world will ensure a better life for future generations.
Pavel Hénik
Pavel Hénik enjoys experimenting with styles and genres, and he is not afraid to be provocative in his fiction. He has won the Knihy Dobrovský Grand Short Story Competition twice. He made his novel debut with Manekýni (Mannequins, 2017), in which he ironically takes aim at consumer society. His second novel, Korporac€ (Corporation€, 2019), is a “social sci-fi” – a light dystopia depicting one possible version of the near future. His third novel, Brrrrnění (Shivering, 2020), deals with the theme of soft drugs. His fourth novel, Kon$pirace (Con$piracy, 2021), is again social sci-fi, this time based on the (un)real events of the COVID pandemic. The author also returns to the dystopian genre in the short story anthology Epizody 2084 (Episodes 2084).
