Equilbey Laurence: Magic Mozart (Arias & Scenes) - CD

The French conductor Laurence Equilbey has a relatively broad artistic scope and regularly collaborates with Europe's best symphony orchestras and renowned French opera houses. However, it is clearly the music of the Classical and early Romantic periods that is closest to her heart, which she devotes herself to primarily with her home orchestra, the Insula Orchestra. She founded this ensemble, which plays on period instruments or their copies, in 2012, and naturally imbued it with her own distinctive artistic vision. Their joint project, Magic Mozart, was originally planned as a “magic cabaret”, a performance combining Mozart's music with live stage dance, clowning, and acrobatic elements. Due to this year's complicated situation, the performance in its originally intended format was postponed, and the musical component was presented only in concert form (albeit with a different cast than on this CD). This also explains why the recording is being released as an audio disc and not a DVD, as was probably originally planned. Nevertheless, this attractive cross-section of Mozart's operas, featuring an ensemble of talented, mostly French soloists and a high-quality, authentic orchestral accompaniment, is definitely worth a listen.
