In the last decade, prolific writer Karel Kubeška has published his fourth book. The current one, Legacy (2026), may loosely follow the previous poetic title, Menuet of Heels Far Away (2024), but it differs significantly from the first two, which are from a sporting environment.

Storytelling, a mosaic of small experiences, a kaleidoscope of unexpected and ordinary situations, all of this accompanies the basic storyline, which is the journey of the protagonist Viktor Svec in search of a mysterious inheritance, bestowed upon him by a deceased relative. The book is a sometimes mocking and sometimes serious caricature of an attempt to understand the logic of life and the functioning of the world in accordance with the inner feelings of an ordinary person integrated into Czech or Czechoslovak society at the end of the last century and the beginning of this one.

Karel Kubeška has dignified the role of a guide to Viktor's life peripeties and with gentle humour, insight and nonchalance he draws the contours of the individual plots leading to the denouement. The legacy contains parts that deserve to be reread, only after which it is possible to form a complete picture of the author's intention to insert into Viktor's DNA the visible and hidden, but clearly omnipresent character pros and cons that make up his personality. And not just him.
