A rare and accessible reminder of a dark period in recent history
Viktorka is the daughter of a "traitor to the people". They all let the fatherless family know they're scum. However, there will be someone who will take the daughter and her mother in. Neither, however, is used to life in the rectory. But while the town lady Helena gets down to work, Viktorka escapes to her verse. The relationship between the cold mother and the sensitive daughter is further damaged by the poems.
A lyrical novel about denunciation but also heroism, bitterness but also love and melancholy, it questions the possibilities of a free life.
