Gang of Four: Entertainment!

LP Record The debut album from the English post-punk band was released in September 1979, a time when punk was already "on the wane". Punk and funk influences are certainly still present, but so are clearly recognisable reggae and dub elements, similar to genre contemporaries like John Lydon's Public Image Ltd, Pere Ubu, and The Pop Group. However, anyone wanting to know where bands like Franz Ferdinand drew their sound and ideas from will also find what they're looking for here. The band operated as a pure democracy (each instrument was given equal space and presence – with interesting results), characterised by a transparent sound and a distinctive, meticulously restrained guitar that is crystal clear and sharp.
