German tank fighters

During the Second World War, all sides struggled with the problem of how to deal with the threat of enemy armoured vehicles. In the interwar period, the Wehrmacht had introduced a 3.7cm anti-tank gun, and it was with this weapon that the victorious armies were equipped during the Blitzkrieg period. However, it soon became clear that the 3.7cm calibre gun did not have sufficient firepower, and more powerful weapons were needed.
In 1942, the hard-pressed Panzerjäger anti-tank units, using towed guns on the Eastern Front, increasingly sought help from assault artillery units equipped with Sturmgeschütz tracked vehicles. By the end of 1943, the StuG was being assigned to new tank destroyer units, and at the same time, development was underway on a specialised vehicle, the Jagdpanzer tank destroyer, based on the chassis and running gear of the PzKpfw IV tank.
This lavishly illustrated book uses archival material and combat reports to explore in detail the development of the Jagdpanzer and many other variants built on the chassis of other German tanks. It also details the organisation of the Jagdpanzer units and their operational experience on the battlefield.
