American punk rock band formed in 1986 around singer Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt. Green Day were part of the California punk scene that formed around the 924 Gilman Street club in Berkley. Initially released on a small independent label Lookout!, they went major label in 1994, where they achieved phenomenal success with their first album Dookie. Sales of the album exceeded 10 million copies in America alone. Green Day is one of the most commercially successful rock bands in the world today, selling over 75 million records and winning numerous awards, including five Grammys.
