Group cognitive-behavioural therapy
Group cognitive-behavioural therapy can fully replace individual cognitive-behavioural therapy for many psychological problems and disorders, and is even more appropriate for some patients. In addition to the usual therapeutic knowledge and skills, group leaders need to understand the dynamics of the group, be able to direct the relationships between group members and use the group's collective potential to the benefit of all.
Understanding and working with group process variables can have two significant benefits:
• enhances the result of therapy – sets the stage for greater change, enables higher levels of intra- and interpersonal learning, and brings a sense of lasting benefits to group members;
• helps solve problems that inevitably arise in a group context.
Group therapy is based on a carefully developed procedure that includes critical information and exercises to support specific cognitive and behavioural techniques. Bringing group process models into cognitive-behavioural therapy will greatly enrich the practice of clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and other psychotherapists, who will be helped to work optimally and therefore more effectively in a group setting.
