Joe Henderson was an American jazz tenor saxophonist.
Born in 1937, he was one of fifteen children (he had nine brothers and five sisters).
He grew up in Lima, Ohio, and was involved in music from childhood, first as a drummer and pianist, and later as a saxophonist. In the mid-1950s, he began performing in clubs on the Detroit jazz scene, while still attending Wayne State University to study music. He formed his first band in 1959. From 1960 to 1962, he served in the army, and upon his return, he settled in New York.
His first album as a leader, titled Page One, was released in 1963 on the Blue Note Records label, produced by Alfred Lion. Later, his albums were released by the record labels Milestone Records and Verve Records.
Throughout his career, he collaborated with many musicians, including Nat Adderley, Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Miroslav Vitouš, Terence Blanchard, Rickie Lee Jones, Blue Mitchell, and the band Blood, Sweat & Tears. He ended his professional career in the late nineties due to illness. He died of heart failure after a long battle with emphysema. He was a Grammy Award winner.
