The Žižkov shelter is home to men who have lost their homes. Thanks to safe accommodation, they can stabilise their situation and, with the help of social workers, solve their problems. The facility has a capacity of 50 beds and is generally full all year round. It is here that 10 places are available on the ground floor of the building, offering wheelchair access and individually focused assistance for men who have found themselves homeless and are ill, use a wheelchair, or have another disability. We need to buy a new industrial washing machine for this part of the shelter.

About the Žižkov shelter
Who will the washing machine help?
The Žižkov shelter is one of the few facilities in Prague with emergency wheelchair-accessible beds that provides help for the most vulnerable group of homeless people. Its aim is to provide immediate accommodation for men whose health or disability is incompatible with living 'on the streets'. In addition to their health, the situation is complicated by other obstacles, mainly a minimal or no income and the absence of family ties. The aim of the accommodation is to improve their health and social situation and to gradually find follow-up services – a retirement home, a wheelchair-accessible social flat, a home with a special regime, or a specialised medical facility.
Is it needed?
In 2019, the occupancy of the wheelchair-accessible part of the shelter was 87%, which is practically full occupancy, with us trying to keep 1 bed free for the immediate admission of a homeless person directly from 'the streets'. The high occupancy rate proves the real need for this specialised service.

About NADĚJE in Prague
NADĚJE was founded after 1989 as one of the first non-profit organisations. It currently operates in almost the entire Czech Republic and provides assistance to the elderly, the homeless, people with disabilities, families at risk, children and young people. NADĚJE has been providing hope for people in need for 30 years. The mission of the Prague branch of NADĚJE is to provide services to homeless people. It operates training flats, shelters and dormitories, low-threshold day centres, an outreach programme and a mobile social service, a GP's surgery, gynaecology, dentistry and psychological assistance.
In Prague's NADĚJE, they help homeless people to live a more dignified and safer life. In 2019, they supported 529 people every day, accommodated 190 people and treated 22 patients in their surgeries.
Organisation's Guarantor
Jakub Dutka currently runs the shelter in Žižkov. He studied social work at the University of Ostrava. Since 2006, he has worked as a social worker, head of social services and methodologist in a number of non-profit organisations focused on helping the socially excluded and the homeless. From 2017 to 2019, he held an expert position in the Department of Social Housing and Social Inclusion of the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. He is also a graduate of psychotherapy training in Gestalt psychotherapy at the Dialog Institute. He co-founded the non-profit organisation Místní místním, which has been helping to create social bonds between homeless people and their surroundings since 2018. He also works as a private psychotherapist.
