Ludvík Aškenazy wrote the play A Guest in the Night in 1959. Ostrava's Petr Bezruč Theatre performed it under the title Night Guest. In 1960 Aškenazy reworked the play for the Central Theatre of the Czechoslovak Army (later the Vinohrady Theatre) and called it Host. Based on Ludvík Aškenazy's 1960 play The Guest, Otakar Vávra made an intimate psychological drama a year later that subtly signalled the relaxing atmosphere in Czechoslovak film. The dark shadows of the past in the form of the German businessman Huppert (Rudolf Hrušínský) intervene in the fate of a group of protagonists in a remote country inn.
